... and mellow fruitfulness. I am still getting lots of apples from the tree, and the tomatoes are ripening. All at once, of course, which is the reason why I didn't grow them in the past.

Beautiful weather, so I took time off from sport on the box and did some tidying up in the garden. I have a bit of a problem here. The bottom of the garden needs a bit of work, but I don't really need to go down there so the temptation is to let it go. But I do understand Nature's way, and the jungle would be back very quickly if I didn't maintain discipline.

Today's apple pick was very good, and I will follow a friend's method - peel and core, then microwave and freeze in useful-sized bags. Apple pies and crumbles through the winter. Will do.

I shall now comment on my golf this week. On Thursday, I played well for a dozen holes, then gave way to fatigue. I have a theory that perhaps I don't eat enough and run out of blood sugar after about three hours into the game. But yesterday was fine, and instead of collapsing I finished birdie, par, and was rewarded with a few quid off the chaps. It's all in the mind, you know.

Lancs CCC have been very annoying this season, underperforming until the last two matches, which they won because they seemed to put their minds to it. Law should retire. Charlton lost at home today, but Liverpool won easily at Everton. Yawn.

I cannot possibly comment about the banking crisis, but I was interested to read in the social affairs section of the Guardian about the work Lehman Bros employees have been doing in the deprived areas of East London. It's not just about cash handouts, but about volunteers from the firm going into the field in their own time, advising and teaching kids how to get their heads straight.

Helen is proposing to jump out of a plane at 10,000 feet (though she will be attached to somebody's parachute) in aid of a special children's charity. Sponsorship needed!

I will receive a visit from Brighton on Tuesday. Jake will stay with me while T & S go to the Dome to a gig. I think the idea is that I play golf in the morning then go straight into the kitchen to start preparing a feast. Or to open a tin of beans. I haven't decided yet.
